Chairboys let duo go

WYCOMBE WANDERERS have confirmed the release of Jason Cousins and Andy Baird.

31-year-old defender Cousins is currently in his testimonial season after moving to Adams Park in 1991, but the club have decided to release him, whilst still helping him with the remainder of his benefit year.

"The deliberation over Couso has been the hardest thing I have had to cope with in my time as manager of the club," said manager Lawrie Sanchez.

"You always know Jason will give 100% whenever he plays but he would have been fifth in line for a place at the back. It seemed unfair to him and the club just to keep him to captain the reserve side with the odd chance he may get first team action.

"With the younger legs of Ben Townsend, Roger Johnson and Danny Senda plus the central position covered by Macca, Thommo and Ted, the only decision was to release him.

"For Couso, this will be a chance for him to get first team football at another club rather than stay here for another season, be released next year and it would be harder for him.

"Like Davy Carroll, Jason has been a wonderful servant to this club and I have told him we will give him all the help he needs with his testimonial.

"All of the players released have asked if they can come back in May and join in with the fitness programme. I am delighted they want to do that and we shall be pleased to see them return and take part".

23-year-old Baird (pictured) has left Wycombe, after making 55 starts and scoring 13 goals.

The striker began his career with The Chairboys, but is now looking for a new club.

"Maybe this is the time for Bairdy to make a move," added Sanchez.

"Often a new club can regain a player's appetite and create a new start. Since his injury, Andy has struggled to show the form we know he is capable of.

"My mind goes back to the game at Maine Road when for twenty minutes both him and Sean [Devine] tore the Champions in waiting apart in their own back yard."
