Ballack injury all clear

MICHAEL BALLACK seems almost certain to face Manchester United in the Champions League on Tuesday, after X-rays confirmed he had suffered only bruising to his foot.

The inspirational Bayer Leverkusen midfielder emerged as a doubt for the second leg with The Red Devils after picking up a nasty looking injury in the defeat by Nurnberg on Saturday.

The player was taken to hospital for tests, and Bayer have confirmed no bones have been broken.

The 25-year-old should now be fit to take his place at the BayArena on Tuesday, with club physiotherapist Dieter Trzolek saying: "It is not totally certain that he will participate, but it is fair to assume that he will be fit."

Saturday`s defeat by Nurnberg has left them behind Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga, meaning the Champions League is now their best chance of glory.

Bayer coach Klaus Toppmoller is certain to have his troops ready to defend their goal-difference advantage, and Ballack`s fitness is sure to be a major fillip for the squad.

Ballack has scored some vital goals in the Champions League this term, having netted in the quarter final win over Liverpool and scored the first leveller in the 2-2 draw at Old Trafford last week.

The Red Devils have been handed a positive injury bulletin themselves, with defensive pair Ronny Johnsen and Laurent Blanc declared fit to face Bayer.

Norwegian ace Johnsen has been struggling with a hamstring injury for the last three weeks, but has now been passed fit.

French World Cup winner Blanc picked up a knee injury in the first leg, but has been given the all clear to link up with the squad for the trip to Germany.
