Bayer close in on Bierofka

BAYER LEVERKUSEN are on the brink of capturing 1860 Munich wide-man Daniel Bierofka for circa £3 million.

With a number of high-profile stars leaving the BayArena in the summer, the German runners-up have identified the former Under-21 international as good reinforcement for next season along with Eintracht Frankfurt defender Christoph Preuss.

"It hurts us very much to lose [Michael] Ballack to Bayern while Ze Roberto is likely to leave too, but in Christoph Preuss and Daniel Bierofka we will get two of Germany's most promising talents," said general manager Reiner Calmund.

Bierofka, 23, is expected to pen a four-year deal with Bayer who are bracing themselves for a revamp of the squad.
