Williams prefers Premiership to SPL

NOTTINGHAM FOREST midfielder Gareth Williams has admitted he would consider playing in the SPL if a bid does not arrive from a Premiership club.

The highly-rated midfielder has revealed that Tottenham are in regular contact with Forest, but no firm bid has been tabled as yet.

Williams feels a move to the English top-flight would be the best career move, but added that turning out for Celtic or former club Rangers would not be a problem.

Newcastle, as well as Spurs, are pursuing Williams, and he states The Premiership is where he wants to play.

Williams said: "Spurs have been the main one over the last six months.

"They have constantly been interested and there has been a lot said in the press down here about a possible move there.

"My agent has also spoken to David Pleat and a few others from the hierarchy down there.

"I must be honest and say a move there would be appealing.

"It would give me the chance to work under someone of Glenn Hoddle's stature and I am sure his coaching methods would be particularly good for a player like myself.

"Working with Hoddle would make me go from strength to strength and the idea excites me but, again, we are speculating here because there is no offer on the table yet to take me to White Hart Lane."

The Glasgow-born 20-year-old was on Rangers` books as a youngster, but this would not worry him if Celtic came calling.

"Playing for Celtic would not be a problem for me in any way whatsoever," he told the Daily Record. "I really mean that even though I know I'll get a lot of hassle from all my family and friends who are Rangers fans.

"I am a professional footballer and I don't have any allegiances to anyone other than myself.

"So playing for Celtic would never be a hurdle for me - far from it.

"The bottom line is if a club like Celtic or Rangers wants you, then you go. It's that simple.

"I wouldn't say I have a preference at this stage and I certainly wouldn't discard Celtic or Rangers for that matter just because the SPL is maybe not the same quality as The Premiership.

"But, in terms of what would be best for my development, I firmly believe The Premiership is one of the best leagues in the world and if you get the opportunity to go there you have to grab it with both hands."
