Dyer considers legal action

NEWCASTLE midfielder Kieron Dyer is considering taking legal action against Southampton's Tahar El Khalej for the tackle that looks to have wrecked his World Cup dreams.

Dyer was left writhing in agony following a rash challenge from the Moroccan international that earned him a straight red card in Saturday's game at St Mary's.

The serious knee damage sustained by the former Ipswich man looks set keep him out of the tournament in Japan and Korea, and he could well seek compensation.

His agent, Jonathan Barnett, says that Dyer could miss out on endorsements that would have followed on from a successful World Cup, and could launch legal action against El Khalej.

"We have considered legal action, certainly against the player and possibly his club," said Barnett.

"We would like to take some action, but we shall have to be advised by the lawyers on how to quantify the damage.

"There is no doubt a player of Kieron's standing would lose out on sponsorship endorsements that might not be realised for another four years.

"A successful World Cup might have inspired a big bid from a top European club," he told the Daily Express.

El Khalej has apologised for the tackle that has put a major dent in England's World Cup hopes.

"I'm so sorry, I never meant to hurt him," said El Khalej. "When I found out he would miss the World Cup I was sad.

"I played in World Cups in 1994 and 1998 and I know it is every player's dream."

Sven Goran Eriksson's plans are now in tatters with Steven Gerrard also a major doubt for the finals, and he should know his fate on Monday after seeing a Belgian specialist about his groin.
