Ireland stroll Quinn testimonial

REPUBLIC OF IRELAND warmed up for the World Cup with a 3-0 win against Sunderland in Niall Quinn's testimonial.

The sizeable Stadium of Light crowd, which totalled nearly 40,000, will have made a fortune for children's charities.

Irish skipper Roy Keane was missing, apparently receiving treatment on a hamstring strain, but the night was all about giant striker Quinn, who appeared for both sides.

The hosts, who welcomed Emerson Thome and Julio Arca back from injury, fell behind in only the third minute when Mark Kennedy capitalised on some good approach play by David Connolly.

The Wimbledon striker turned goalscorer on 33 minutes when his free kick arrowed its way past Jurgen Macho.

Kevin Phillips, on as an early subsitute for the Wearsiders, was denied by Shay Given, with the Newcastle number one receiving a frosty reception from the crowd who once cheered him during an impressive loan stint with The Black Cats.

Another player who has had to endure criticism from the vocal Stadium of Light faithful, Sunderland's very own Kevin Kilbane added a late third with a header on 79 minutes, to record only his second goal at the ground all season.

The winger, who has been linked with a move to Middlesbrough, will be looking to show his best form in Japan and Korea, and that goal could be the kickstart he needed.
