Wolves confirm Irwin interest

WOLVERHAMPTON WANDERERS have confirmed their interest in signing veteran full back Denis Irwin on a free transfer.

The former Irish international is out of contract after Manchester United decided against offering the 12-year veteran of the club a new deal.

Wolves narrowly missed out on promotion to the Premiership, and manager Dave Jones feels Irwin's experience could just be what the side need to make it into the elite.

"This has all been brought out by the fact that we need a right back, and Denis Irwin is soon going to be out of contract at Old Trafford," said Molineux chief executive Jez Moxey.

"I cannot say that we have not discussed Denis Irwin, because we have, but only in the same way that we have discussed a lot of players since the end of the season.

"In any case, nothing is going to happen for weeks yet. I will be amazed if any player moves before June 30 when their contracts run out."

The Cork-born star played a pivotal role in United's superb run of success over the past decade, helping The Red Devils win the Premiership title no less than seven times.
