Rovers confirm Thompson approach

BLACKBURN ROVERS have confirmed they are making an approach for Coventry City midfielder David Thompson.

Rovers have been among a number of clubs linked with the former England Under-21 midfielder in recent weeks, but are the first to confirm their interest.

Chief executive John Williams said: "We have made an enquiry to Coventry City about midfielder David Thompson but at this stage it is no more than that.

"He is a player that Graeme is interested in but there has not been a bid."

The Sky Blues signed the right flanker from Liverpool two years ago for £3 million, but - after he won the club's player of the Year award last term - they will want at least £4 million for the player.

Thompson, 24, like team-mate Lee Hughes, is likely to leave Highfield Road this summer to give Gary McAllister much needed money to turn The Sky Blues into a promotion challenging side.
