Cobra forced out of Valencia

ROMANIAN forward Adrian Ilie has admitted he is on his way out of Valencia after four seasons with the club.

'The Cobra' has grown increasingly frustrated with life at the Mestalla, despite Valencia winning the Spanish league last season.

Coach Rafa Benitez has used a rotational system for six strikers which has largely proved effective, if not popular.

At a press conference to announce his decision, Ilie said: "I was not given the opportunity to prove myself this last season and that is lamentable.

"My contract has ended and if they do not want to renegotiate, then they must go.

"It hurt me that they did not allow me to play because I wanted to play, but it was not to be.  I believed that I deserved it.

"Some said that they gave me many opportunities but I do not believe that.

"I have won the Cup and league here.  I do not leave empty handed.

"A cycle has finished and such is the life of football players, one day you are with a team and tomorrow you are with another."

Reflecting on his times at Valencia, Ilie said: "The first year with (Claudio) Ranieri was best.  After the first year with (Hector) Cuper I thought about leaving.

"When I was on the pitch I gave everything.  It was the coach who decided if I played.  There have been explanations given to me why I didn't play but none convinced me.

"I want to thank the fans for the affection they showed me.  I will never forget them and always take them in my heart."

Talking about the future, Ilie said: "There are possibilities of remaining in Spain, but there are also teams from France and Italy interested."
