Beckham in confident mood

ENGLAND captain David Beckham has confirmed that he is ready to start his country's opening World Cup game against Sweden on Sunday.

The Manchester United ace only joined in full training this week, but he insisted at a press conference on Thursday that he would be more than ready to play.

"It's a lot better than it was four or five days ago," he said when asked about how well his broken foot had healed.

"I always had it in my mind to be back for the Sweden game so hopefully it'll be okay.

"Being in a World Cup you've got to be sure you can last the 90 minutes." Beckham also revealed that he would not be easing off in the game for the fear of getting injured.

"You have got to go into every tackle thinking it will be okay and that's what I will do," he continued.

"I have been through a few tackles already and it seems okay, and so I am happy with it.

"There's been a lot of hype around it, and a lot of well-wishers - from family members up to the Queen, which was nice!

"I wanted to be fit so badly and in the last week it has all come together.

"Now the focus has got to turn to the other players and the staff. There's has been so much hype around `the foot' and now the focus has got to turn to the squad.

"I am just happy that everything is okay and it all seems to be coming together now."

The Londoner also explained that he thought he would be unable to take part in the finals, after he broke his foot against Deportivo La Coruna in the Champions League at the end of last season.

"When I did it I knew it was broken and I did think I would be out of the World Cup. It was pretty bad at the time," he said.

"I wasn't that confident of making it at the time, but I always had it in mind to make it."

He also admits that England are very confident going into Sweden's game.

"You've got to believe," he added. "If you went into a game worrying about the other team there's big problems.

"We believe we can beat Sweden and take it from there but we're not taking it for granted.

"They are a good team and we will see what happens.

"We have set our own very high standards and we have got to make sure we keep those up.

"It is the 'Group of Death' we are in, we know that, but we are a young, talented and experienced squad and I am sure we will come together."
