Celtic complete Fernandez deal

CELTIC have completed the signing of Livingston striker David Fernandez.

The 26-year-old was one of Livi's star performers last season as he grabbed six goals in 30 starts to help the Lothian outfit make Europe for the first time in their history.

Livingston signed Fernandez from Airdrie in March 2001 and they have made a near £1 million profit on the player who was out-of-contract later this year.

Livi manager Jim Leishman paid tribute to his former charge, saying: "David is a great character and a special player.

"He was a fantastic acquisition for Livingston FC and did a terrific job for this club - both on and off the park. I can only wish him all the very best of success at Celtic Park.

"The Bosman rule meant that any interested clubs could certainly have gained David's signature anytime after November of this year, so in that respect, it made good business sense for Livingston to facilitate the transfer.

"What we have to do now is set about finding the next David Fernandez. But that doesn't necessarily mean looking abroad.

"We have a number of youngsters within our own Youth Academy who have worked alongside the senior players, they know the levels they have to aspire to, and a few are already close to making the break-through."
