Fifa warn Rivaldo

BRAZILIAN ace Rivaldo has been warned by Fifa that any more instances of play-acting during the World Cup will not be tolerated.

Rivaldo was fined 10,000 Swiss francs after his disgraceful over-reaction in Monday's 2-1 victory over Turkey.

Turkey's Hakan Unsal blasted the ball at Rivaldo's leg in the dying moments of the clash but the Barcelona forward went down clutching his face.

Unsal was sent off in the incident, just minutes after Rivaldo had dispatched the controversial penalty that secured the points for Brazil.

However, the triumph was overshadowed by Rivaldo's shambolic behaviour and a warning letter has been sent to the Brazilian federation by Fifa's disciplinary committee.

"The letter says that he may be sanctioned strongly by Fifa's disciplinary committee if he continues to behave in this manner," said communications director Keith Cooper.

Disciplinary committee chairman Marcel Mathier added in a statement: "We regret a world-class player has to resort to this type of subterfuge. Fifa wants to demonstrate that this type of simulation cannot be accepted and go unpunished."

Prior to the tournament, Fifa issued a directive to referees to clamp down on any examples of 'simulation.'

Rivaldo is the first player to be punished, albeit by Fifa rather than the match official, but there was widespread condemnation for the failure to impose a suspension on the samba star for feigning injury.
