Doni may snub Reds interest
The Merseysiders have emerged as the most keenly interested party from The Premiership, even though Manchester United and Leeds United have also been alerted by the playmaker's likely availability.
Doni's agent has confirmed that Gerard Houllier's side are in regular contact with Atalanta, but the player's desire is to join a major force in his homeland.
"For Doni, the Liverpool hypothesis remains," Paolo Conti stated.
"The English club are very interested in my assistance and they are in frequent contact with Atalanta.
"However, on Doni's part, there is the strong will to remain in Italy.
"The interest of Liverpool is flattering, for sure, but it is considered a second choice as he prefers Serie A," the agent told calciomanager.it.
Roma have shown some determination to net the 29-year-old, but much could depend on the player raising his profile during the World Cup.
The former Brescia and Bologna man started Italy's comfortable opening 2-0 victory over Ecuador, and there is every likelihood that he will have a large part to play in Giovanni Trapattoni's plans.
After top scoring for Atalanta with 16 goals from midfield last term, and being involved in either netting or setting up over half of his side's goals in Serie A, there can be no doubting the pedigree of the player.
Liverpool boss Houllier is believed to be seeking a neat passer of the ball in the Jamie Redknapp mould, after the former Bournemouth man joined Tottenham under the Bosman Ruling.
