Ziege shaves off Mohawk

GERMANY wing back Christian Ziege has shaved off his striking Mohawk haircut because he was worried it was attracting more interest than his World Cup performances.

The Tottenham star sported David Beckham's former hairstyle, died in the colours of the German flag, in his country's opening matches against Saudi Arabia and Ireland.

The image appeared to be overshadowing his performances in the Far East, prompting the decision to take a razor to his head.

He told Spurs' official website: "I just felt that people were starting to talk more about my hair than the football.

"It was done for a bit of fun, but after the Ireland game, reporters started to take more notice of my hair in a bad way. I decided it was time to cut it off.

If players from other countries, like England, do it they think it is cool. When one of ours does it they don't really like it and talk about it too much.

"So now it is off."

Despite playing in both matches so far, Ziege's place in the German side could be under threat for the crunch game against Cameroon on Tuesday.

Coach Rudi Voller was critical of his side's play on the left wing against Ireland, and that may mean Ziege misses out for a fixture Germany must not lose if they are to stay in the World Cup.
