Cygan in Arsenal visit

The centre back was outstanding in last season's Champions League and has been targeted by a number of clubs, including West Ham, Southampton and Celtic.

Yet it was believed Cygan would stay in France with Rennes keen to tie up a deal for the 28-year-old.

Arsenal's firm interest will obviously alter the situation dramatically, and the fact that the player has been to North London to visit the club means that there must be a good chance of him joining The Gunners, providing a deal can be struck with Lille.

A sticking point could be that Lille will raise their asking price if Arsene Wenger makes a bid, but the Frenchman could be a shrewd acquisition for the former Grampus Eight boss.

With Tony Adams still mulling over his future, and Newcastle target Martin Keown out of contract, the Premiership champions are in need of central defensive reinforcements.
