Pompey out of Wallwork race

PORTSMOUTH have conceded defeat in their bid to snap up Ronnie Wallwork, leaving West Brom in pole position to capture the versatile Manchester United man.

Pompey boss Harry Redknapp revealed Wallwork was reticent about dropping down to the First Division, despite the Fratton Park outfit matching West Brom's offer.

Wallwork is available on a free transfer after deciding to quit Old Trafford in search of regular first team football, with Premiership newcomers West Brom now favourites to land his services.

Redknapp, though, could not contain his disappointment at missing out on the 24-year-old, who can play in defence or midfield.

"I'm really disappointed," said Redknapp.

"Ronnie was someone I was always very keen to sign because I was impressed with his attitude but you can understand him wanting to play in The Premiership.

"We were willing to match what West Brom were offering. That wasn't the problem but he just felt dropping down a division was not the right thing to do and we have to respect that.

"This is a blow but the fact Ronnie didn't say no straight away shows we're pushing in the right direction."

Meanwhile, Redknapp has offered veteran keeper Dave Beasant the opportunity to continue his career on the South Coast.

The 43-year-old is currently a free agent and has been asked to provide back-up to Shaka Hislop, whom Redknapp is hoping to sign from West Ham for nothing.

Beasant does have offers from Leicester, Coventry and Walsall on the table and is mulling over his future.

"Harry has rung me and he wants me to come back down there," said Beasant. "But Harry warned me he wanted to sign another keeper and he would be signing Shaka to play him.

"I understand the situation but I'm unsure about what to do. I'm weighing it all up.

"I've got offers from other clubs and I'm seeing how things develop. I've still got a while to sort things out."
