Uncertain future for Roberts

ANDY ROBERTS is facing an uncertain summer after admitting he does not know where he will be playing football next season after his Wimbledon contract expired.

Roberts, 28, has highlighted the collapse of ITV Digital as one of the main reasons behind the massive amount of uncertainty facing most players in the game today.

"It's the first time I've ever been in this situation, and the ITV Digital thing means this is the most worrying time ever for a player who falls out of contract," said Roberts.

"A couple of years ago, being on a Bosman would have been a good thing, but I've honestly no idea where I'll be playing football next season.

"I'm training at Wimbledon until next week, but after that I'll be on my own which will be very hard. I've been trying to keep fit on my own, but my Dad has been ringing round local clubs to see if I can join them in training."

Roberts spent a month on loan at Norwich last season, and had hoped to secure a permanent move to Carrow Road, but the club opted against a move for the former Dons ace after agreeing a new deal with Philip Mulryne.

"I really enjoyed it at Norwich and they said that if Phil (Mulryne) did not sign then they would sign me.

"I was hoping that would work out, but once he signed I knew they weren't going to bring me in as an extra midfielder. Division One clubs cannot afford to have spare players at the moment.

"Up until last season I never even had an agent because me and my Dad found my own moves from Millwall to Crystal Palace and from Palace to Wimbledon," concluded Roberts.

Meanwhile, Wimbledon have confirmed they will be playing their home matches next season at Selhurst Park, and not the Milton Keynes sports complex as had been rumoured.

A statement on wimbledon-fc.co.uk read: "Wimbledon Football Club will commence the 2002/2003 season at Selhurst Park, playing there for the forseeable future.

"It still remains the club's intention to move to Milton Keynes as soon as possible."
