Seaman to get new Gunners deal

ARSENAL are set to offer David Seaman a new one-year deal as Gunners boss Arsene Wenger still rates him as the "best goalkeeper in the country".

Wenger is keen to keep the veteran custodian at Highbury for another season with his present deal expiring in this summer.

There have been suggestions that the 39-year-old was considering his future following his mistake in the World Cup defeat to Brazil allowing Ronaldinho's free kick sail over his head into the net to end England's World Cup dreams.

Seaman has also struggled with a series of injuries, but Wenger is adamant that he is still first choice shot-stopper despite the presence of Richard Wright.

Wenger feels that Seaman still has a future at club and international level and hopes to agree a new deal with the former Queens Park Rangers ace.

"I will try to call David this week but I think he had a good World Cup," Wenger told the London Evening Standard.

"He needn't feel ashamed of letting in that goal. That shot would have beaten every goalkeeper in the tournament.

"It is clear that the guy wanted to cross the ball. I can understand why Sven-Goran Eriksson wants to keep David on. It is the same reason why I want him to stay at Arsenal.

"That reason is because David is the best goalkeeper in England. It is as simple as that. We will talk about things in the next few days and I hope he will decide to stay on."

Seaman played a pivotal role in Arsenal's Double success last season and news of a new deal will be a major boost for the plans this term.
