Greenacre signs for Stoke

FIRST DIVISION new boys Stoke City have captured coveted striker Chris Greenacre on a free transfer from Mansfield Town.

The free-scoring 24-year-old had been chased by a string of clubs, including Nottingham Forest and Sheffield Wednesday, but Stoke have won the race for his signature.

Greenacre has penned a three-year contract at The Britannia Stadium, and becomes new manager Steve Cotterill's first signing.

The former Manchester City player rattled in 44 league goals in 111 appearances for Mansfield and played a pivotal part in The Stags' promotion from Division Three.

His arrival in The Potteries ends Cotterill's quest for a striker and the manager was delighted to land his key target.

"We are delighted to get him," Cotterill told the club's official website.

"Without doubt Chris was one of the most promising young strikers in the lower divisions and is a player very much on the up.

"He is an excellent signing and is the player we wanted."

Greenacre is confident he will handle the step up in grade and revealed Cotterill's position at the Stoke helm was a major factor behind his decision.

"I am delighted to sign for Stoke and can't wait for the new season," said Greenacre.

"The set-up here and the stadium is impressive and Steve Cotterill's appointment in May was a big factor in my decision.

"I feel I can improve my game further and the manager has an excellent reputation as a coach and has a first-class coaching back-up team with him here."
