Chester seal Harkness coup

STEVE HARKNESS has completed his move to Conference side Chester City after being released by cash-strapped Sheffield Wednesday.

The left-sided defender was allowed to leave as The Owls looked to cut the wage bill and ambitious Chester moved swiftly to secure his services.

Stephen Vaughan, the City chairman, was delighted to have the 30-year-old on board and hopes his acquisition can help the club return to the football league.

"This is great news for us. Steve's experience will be invaluable and his possible involvement on the coaching side could well open up a new career for him," explained Vaughan.

Harkness will link up with former Liverpool team-mate Mark Wright who is the current Chester manager.

Vaughan believes the presence of Wright at the helm has proved decisive in luring Harkness to the North West, declaring: "I have no doubt Mark's friendship with Steve was an important factor."
