Tofting charged with assault

BOLTON WANDERERS midfielder Stig Tofting has been charged with two counts of assault following bust-up with staff of a restaurant in Copenhagen late last month, in which he was arrested and jailed by police.

The Danish World Cup star was charged one count of assault for head butting restaurant manager Patrick de Neef during a Danish World Cup team party at 'Café Ketchup' in the Danish capital.

The former Hamburg player was also charged with another count of assault for knocking down chef Michael Wilson outside the restaurant during the bust-up.

The Trotters midfielder will face the charges in a Copenhagen court in October and if found guilty, could face a sentence of several months in a Danish prison.

Prosecutor Jan Rasmussen stated that seven witnesses would be called to testify at the court case in the fall.

During the incident in which Tofting was alleged to have assaulted the restaurant staff, eight other Danish internationals were also present at 'Cafe Ketchup' but none of them have yet been confirmed to give evidence as witnesses.

32-year-old Tofting is known as a battling midfielder on the pitch but has also endured a difficult and sometimes controversial past, having been a member of the motorcycle gang Hells Angels as well as having to deal with the death his parents when he was a teenager.
