Burnley trial young Frenchman

BURNLEY are giving a week's trial to French youngster Sylvain Meslien, as Clarets boss Stan Ternent looks to add to his squad ahead of the coming season.

Meslien, who plays for Saint Etienne, would be competing for a place in a defence that proved tough to break down last campaign.

At just 22, Ternent (pictured) is aware that he would be getting a player for the future, and he has already proved his ability at snapping up youngsters from Le Championnat.

Last year saw the arrival of defender Arthur Gnohere from Caen.

The French star, although occasionally looking a little raw, established himself as a firm fan-favourite and scored one of the goals of the season against Preston North End.

Meslien has yet to truly establish himself in the Saint Etienne first team, and at 22 it seems likely that Burnley would have to pay some kind of fee for the youngster - should they decide to make the deal permanent.

Meslien, who plays at full back, is renowned for his ability to balance forward runs with his defensive duties.

St Etienne's settled defence has meant limited exposure for Meslien, but he is highly regarded in the French press, and, should he impress, could prove to be another cut-price addition to the Clarets' ranks.
