Savio to see out Real contract

REAL MADRID striker Savio has put to rest any thoughts of a move away from Santiago Bernabeu by stating his intention to remain with La Liga giants until his contract expires.

The 28-year-old Brazilian had been linked with a move away from the Spanish club with Besiktas failing to lure him and Real team-mate Flavio Conceicao to Turkey next season.

Savio himself had admitted last week that he would fancy a return to Brazilian football with Flamengo and was also linked with arch-rivals Atletico Madrid but has since decided to see out his contract with the Champions League holders.

Savio said: "I have already said what is my position.

"My agent spoke with (Real Madrid sports director) Jorge Valdano and gave him many options for resolving my situation.

"I had said that if I travelled to Austria (for pre-season training), I will do the year of my contract that I still have at Real Madrid and I have done that.

"We have never considered Atletico Madrid as the best choice for me.

"We think that it's a good team but nothing else, thinking that way doesn't mean that I will play there.

"We must not see ghosts where they don't exist and nobody should misinterpret what my agent had said.

"He was asked what was best for my future and he said that it was in Madrid.

"But it was clear that he meant to say 'Real Madrid'."

Meanwhile, the Brazilian admitted that he is baffled by Barcelona's decision to release fellow countryman Rivaldo from his contract at Camp Nou.

With the Brazilian World Cup winner out of the Catalans' line-up, the striker thinks it will give Real an advantage for the season ahead.

He added: "Rivaldo's departure is very good for Real Madrid and makes things a little bit easier (for us).

"It's incredible what is happening with Rivaldo.

"I don't understand but I see that football has changed very much in the last few years.

"A player like Rivaldo, that comes from winning the World Cup, in which he played very well, arrives to his club and suffers something like this, it's very strange.

"I don't know what is happening with coaches and with football, Rivaldo is an excellent player and I'm having a hard time understanding what is going on (in Rivaldo's case).

"What I see now is that he will have many chances for showing how much he is worth as a football player and what he can do for his (new) team.

"I hope he has much luck in his new team."

Real team-mate and fellow Brazilian Flavio Conceicao also expressed his surprise at the current situation with Rivaldo.

Conceicao said: "He is a player that in my opinion was the best one in the World Cup.

"He doesn't have to demonstrate to anyone how good a player he is and the quality as a person and a professional he has been.

"Barcelona is going to miss him very much and everyone knows that."
