Tykes trial for Wijnhard
Dutch forward Wijnhard has been training with Haarlem in his native country for the past few weeks, while his representatives try to sort out his future.
Wijnhard turned down a contract offer from Preston, who he spent the end of last season with, and is looking at other options.
The 28-year-old was hoping The Lilywhites would come back with an improved offer, but so far nothing has materialised.
Wijnhard would prefer to stay in Division One, but by taking a trial with Barnsley is showing that he is prepared to drop down the leagues.
The forward has been persuaded to go to Oakwell by his former Huddersfield team-mate Dean Gorre, who is now tied to The Tykes.
Wijnhard will spend a few days training with Steve Parkin`s team, and is likely to get some playing time as The Tykes step up their pre-season work.
Parkin will be looking for the striker to show the talent that made him a real force at Huddersfield, but he has been struggling to regain form since suffering a terrible arm injury in a car crash in September 2000.
A full summer`s training could see Wijnhard recapture his past form, and he would be a real force in Division Two if he gets back to his best.
