Antonioli signs Roma extension

FRANCESCO ANTONIOLI has signed a contract extension with Serie A side Roma that will see the veteran goalkeeper remain at the club until 2004.

Roma president Franco Sensi stated earlier this month that the Giallorossi number one would stay at the Stadio Olimpico for another two seasons.

The 32-year-old had a solid season in goal last term after taking much criticism the season before for his displays, despite the Roman club winning the Scudetto during that campaign.

He looks to continue in his current role as number one for manager Fabio Capello, despite the club's interest this spring in luring Chelsea keeper Carlo Cudicini back to Italy with the club.

Ironically, Antonioli was rumoured to be on Blues boss Claudio Ranieri's wanted list last November but no serious bid was made by the Stamford Bridge side for the veteran.

Antonioli has amassed over 100 appearances in Serie A and was late replacement for Angelo Peruzzi in Italy's Euro 2000 squad two years ago.

Meanwhile, the Giallorossi have announced their squad numbers for the coming season, with Antonioli retaining the number one jersey.

Brazilian World Cup winner Cafu will wear the number two jersey while striker Francesco Totti will wear number ten and Argentine hitman Gabriel Batistuta wearing number 33.

The number six jersey, worn last season by Brazilian defender Aldair, has not been issued for the new season as he looks to be moving to a new club as early as next week.
