Mariners take duo off transfer list

The Mariners were initially forced to list Coyne and Jevons in an attempt to raise cash because of severe financial difficulties brought on by the collapse of ITV Digital.

Coyne was linked with a move to Division Two side Cardiff City but both the Welsh custodian and former Everton hitman Jevons will remain with Grimsby and help boss Paul Groves's side improve on last season's difficult campaign in Division One.

A Grimsby spokesman said: "Phil and Danny have been taken off the transfer list and will remain at Grimsby Town.

"Paul Groves has always insisted the decision was purely financial and Grimsby's board of directors have now found it possible to allow the manager to keep them on.

"We're still a couple of bodies short, but it's still good news."

With the club making money available to Groves recently, The Mariners boss has been able to sign Darren Barnard and Steve Chettle as well as keep Coyne and Jevons for the new season.

Meanwhile, Groves is waiting for a reply from Premiership side West Ham on whether Grimsby will be able to snap up trialist Grant McCann on loan.

The Mariners boss is keen to sign the 22-year-old Northern Ireland international but the Upton Park club seem reluctant to let him go.

Hammers boss Glenn Roeder said: "Paul Groves rung me and would like to take him on loan to the next transfer window, which is in January.

"We have to give it some thought and make the right decision for us.

"If we let him go we can't see him again until January.

"We can't bring him in at all and I have to decide what is best for West Ham.

"Everyone has got to look after themselves."
