I should not have joined Magpies - Ginola

DAVID GINOLA has admitted that he should have moved to one of the European giants rather than Newcastle United when leaving Paris Saint Germain in 1995.

The French wide-man moved to The Magpies from the French capital and was an instant hit at St James' Park with his swaggering runs down the flank thrilling the North East terraces.

However, Ginola, now 35, claims if he could go back in time he would have chosen Real Madrid, Barcelona or even Manchester United ahead of Newcastle.

"I am sorry I could not have played for great European clubs - like AC Milan, Real Madrid or Manchester United," Ginola told 'The Sun'.

"I should have taken another springboard rather than Newcastle when I left Paris St Germain.

"That would have enabled me to be fulfilled and really come into my own on a personal level.

"My career would have taken a different turning. But, since you can't rewrite the past, I'm not going to complain."

The Gallic star was particularly disappointed at missing out on the achievements of the French national side, in particular the 1998 World Cup triumph on home soil.

"When I look at the 22 Frenchmen who became world champions - and see that, despite everything I've brought to football, I had no part in the World Cup or the European Championship - it seems illogical and unfair," added Ginola.

Retirement is on the horizon for the charismatic Frenchman who recently snubbed the chance to join First Division Portsmouth.

"Deep down, I want to play on. But there is only room for the young now," conceded Ginola.

"Clubs hesitate to place their confidence in you and that is pushing retirement ages down.

"It's all over for a footballer at just 32 now. Now, if nothing comes up, I will take a well-earned retirement.

"The last two seasons have been difficult. Another like the one I've just had would not be worthwhile."
