Phillips`s injury blow

WREXHAM midfielder Wayne Phillips is expected to miss the entire campaign after suffering an horrific double leg fracture on the opening day of the season.

Phillips incurred the injury just eight minutes into Wrexham's 1-1 draw at Scunthorpe United after a challenge with James Cotterill.

The noise created by the impact of the tackle was heard in the stands and Phillips was stretchered off Glanford Park.

It is a bitter blow for the 31-year-old who is only on a month-to-month contract at the Racecourse Ground.

However, Wrexham boss Dennis Smith confirmed that Phillips would be offered a longer-term deal, despite the likelihood that he will be unavailable for the Third Division campaign.

"The awful injury to Wayne Phillips cast a huge shadow over our afternoon," Smith told the club's official website.

"As soon as he went down, we were on to treat him, but it turned out that he had a double fracture, which obviously took the edge away from the rest of the game.

"The good thing is that the chairman came straight in afterwards and said that the club would be looking after the lad, which was pleasing and nice of him to say so.

"That at least will be some good news for Wayne.

"The bad news is that it's a horrible break and my heart goes out to him, I've been there myself."
