Bishop takes Rochdale trial

ROCHDALE have handed midfielder Ian Bishop a trial with the Division Three outfit as manager Paul Simpson aims to bolster his squad for the new campaign in Division Three.

The former Everton, West Ham and Manchester City player had been with League of Wales champions Barry Town recently - having appeared for them in the Champions League qualifiers this summer.

The 37-year-old left The Citizens in March 2001 to play a season in America's Major League Soccer with the Miami Fusion, who were then managed by Geordie coach Ray Hudson.

However, Bishop soon returned after the Fusion were folded by MLS last winter and he joined the Welsh side for the start of the new season.

Simpson told the Rochdale official website: "I want to have a look at him."

Bishop is due to appear for the Spotland club's reserves on Wednesday when they travel to Macclesfield Town.

Meanwhile, German trialist Eddie Loewen has decided to return to the United States and take up a coaching role, after failing to land a contract with The Dale.

The 24-year-old centre half joined Paul Simpson's side in mid-July for pre-season after spending the last few years in America playing university-level football at Berry College.

Loewen picked up an ankle injury with the Spotland side and the German has decided instead to take a coaching position with the women's football squad at Ohio-based Akron University.

On his decision to leave Rochdale, Loewen told the club's official website: "The ankle is not so good and is taking a long time to heal and when it does I'll pursue my ambition to play football professionally.

"I hope things go well for Rochdale Football Club, I enjoyed every minute of my time there and I send everyone my regards."
