West Brom 1 Fulham 0

NEWLY-PROMOTED West Bromwich Albion got their season up and rolling with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Fulham at the Hawthorns.

In a match of few chances defender Darren Moore was on hand to head home following a scramble in the penalty area, after 48 minutes to claim the vital winner.

The Baggies entered the match without a point, after three straight defeats against some of the Premiership big-boys, but moved out of the bottom three after defeating The Cottagers.

The return of Lee Hughes, alongside Jason Roberts, seemed the galvanise the home side, and it was they who created the better of the first half chances.

However, Dutch shot-stopper Edwin van der Saar was outstanding in the visitors net, although the former Juventus star was helpless to stop Moore putting the Midlands outfit ahead just after half-time.

Unlike against Middlesbrough, when Fulham pulled the rabbit out of the hat to nick a late draw, there was no come back for Jean Tigana's men as they slipped to their first defeat of the season.
