Swiss move for Haas

SWISS side FC Basel have swooped to sign Bernt Haas on loan from Sunderland.

The club were linked with a move earlier in the month, and their victory over Celtic in Champions League qualification prompted them to make a firm approach.

The defender has joined the club in a season-long loan deal, with an option to make the move permanent next summer.

Basel boss Christian Gross was always keen to bring him back to Switzerland and tied up the formalities ahead of Saturday`s transfer deadline.

The 24-year-old played a number of games for The Black Cats following his move from Grasshoppers last term, but boss Peter Reid deemed him surplus to requirements over the summer and was more than happy to get him off the wage bill.
