Levein praises Hearts' new faces

HEARTS manager Craig Levein is glad he ignored Luton chief Joe Kinnear's criticism of winger Jean-Louis Valois, and said that it was worth selling Antti Niemi in order to sign Phil Stamp.

Valois was labelled as 'greedy' by the Hatters boss who also questioned his commitment after he failed to agree a new deal at Kenilworth Road.

Levein says he has seen no signs of the 28-year-old being a tricky customer and is delighted with the start he has made.

"The comments were a bit unfair," said Levein.

"Wingers can be the most frustrating players in the world but I have not seen any indication of Jean-Louis not trying - he is contributing massively.

"I know he will have his off days, and I expect that but I have a huge respect for his talent.

"Jean-Louis's name came up last season when we were looking for a wide left player but we needed other positions sorted first so we didn't do anything about it.

"When we needed someone for that position, he was the first one we thought of."

Fellow new-boy Phil Stamp is also impressing the boss following his switch from Middlesbrough.

The Jambos had to sacrifice talented goalkeeper Niemi in order to bring Stamp to Tynecastle, a decision that Levein now says has worked out well.

"I was down at Middlesbrough's training academy and discovered Phil was out of Steve McClaren's plans," Levein added.

"I asked if there was any possibility of getting him and when I got a favourable response I pushed ahead.

"But I would not have been able to get Phil if we had not sold Antti Niemi.

"I was sick to lose Antti but so far it's worked out because Roddy McKenzie is playing well for us in goal."
