Swindon transfers embargoed again

SWINDON TOWN have been placed under another transfer embargo by the Football League.

The move comes in response to the Wiltshire club's failure to pay transfer-listed defender Neil Ruddock an outstanding loyalty bonus payment.

However, the County Ground side have been given permission to apply for approval towards making new signings as cover in vital positions.

Swindon have suffered under previous blanket embargoes which restricted the Division Two outfit from signing new players until monies that were owed to the Football League were paid.

The current embargo is not as restrictive as the outstanding payment relates to a member of The Robins' squad - this case being the former England man.

The former Liverpool and West Ham player has a loyalty bonus clause in his contract and Swindon are attempting to negotiate a settlement with Ruddock, in order to save money off their wage bill.

Swindon's chief executive Mark Devlin told the club's official website: "We are obviously disappointed that the Football League have taken this action but not surprised.

"The Football League are aware that we have met with Neil Ruddock and his representatives and are doing everything we can to reach a negotiated settlement.

"I hope that the Football League will now show common sense when we apply for cover in any of our key playing areas, given that we are operating on one of the smallest squads in the division in an effort to keep to our financial budget."

Meanwhile, Swindon's new assistant manager Steve Coppell has invited former Crystal Palace midfielder Simon Rodger to train with boss Andy King's side.

The 31-year-old (pictured) was released at the end of last season by Palace manager Trevor Francis following a 12-year spell at Selhurst Park, where he made over 250 appearances for The Eagles.

He failed to find a new club during the summer and will now look to impress The Robins during his time at the County Ground.

On the inclusion of Rodger, King said: "Simon comes on the recommendation of Steve Coppell and I'm happy for him to join up with us this week.

"Obviously, he played for Steve at Palace and he knows all about him.

"I'll have a look at him during training this week and we'll see what happens after that.

"If he does well then there may be an opportunity to extend his stay with us."
