Ortero: We must have consistency

JORGE ORTERO has called for refereeing consistency following his sending off against Recreativo de Huelva in Atletico Madrid's 1-1 draw on Sunday.

Both sides ended with ten men but Ortero's dismissal proved key as Atletico clung on for a draw in a game they were expected to win by some margin.

Speaking about the decision, Ortero agreed he should have got a red card but called for more referees to make the same decision.

"It could have been a red and I'm not saying I should not have been sent off.  I went for the ball, but I got there late, but these days we see similar tackles and the punishment is different," said Ortero.

He added: "The referees must unify their criteria.

"This is the thing about football and it is not necessary to keep going back to it.

"Yesterday there was another foul similar to mine, yet that was only a yellow card and I believe that the punishment should have been the same.

"What bothers me is that similar tackles have different punishments, but it is necessary to keep at it and we cannot blame everything on the referees.  We must improve and have a little more luck, but the main thing is to play better.

"With a player less we deserved to win.  It is difficult to explain how eleven against eleven we were not superior."
