United's late salvo stuns Everton

MANCHESTER UNITED laboured for most of the game but somehow emerged with a 3-0 victory over a hard working Everton side, with all three goals in the final four minutes of the match.

Paul Scholes got the first as Lei Weifeng's header was not powerful enough to clear the danger and the England midfielder drilled home a left-footed effort in the 86th minute.

A Ruud van Nistelrooy penalty made it two as David Weir was sent off for pulling back Ole Gunnar Solksjaer.  In injury time Scholes thrashed home a stunning drive to make it three and complete a lop-sided scoreline.

The result was a travesty for a hard-working Everton side that had successfully blunted much of what the home side had to offer for the majority of the game.

The closest United came in the first half to a goal was van Nistelrooy cutting in from the left and firing wide, whilst at the other end Kevin Campbell scuffed his shot wide.

Substitute Solskjaer had only been on the field for a couple of minutes but miskicked when well placed in front of goal and van Nistelrooy thundered a shot over the bar following a poor defensive header from David Unsworth.

David Beckham's attempted lob hit the top of the bar, but as usual the United faithful did not give up hope and eventually they were rewarded.

Weir's offence on Solskjaer appeared to start outside the area and a sending off and penalty appeared unjust, whilst Scholes's late drive was reminiscent of Bobby Charlton in his prime.

Everton gave Wayne Rooney his chance and he showed his class with a great run into the box, beating two players in the process but his shot was easily held by Fabien Barthez.
