Worthington dismisses Magpies Kenton link

NORWICH CITY boss Nigel Worthington has played down speculation linking Canaries defender Darren Kenton with a possible move to Newcastle.

Reports in Tuesday's press suggested that Newcastle were tracking the 24-year-old and were preparing a move for the player when the transfer window re-opens in January.

Kenton's current deal expires at the end of this season and as yet he has failed to sign a new one.

Worthington has dismissed the reports and is confident that Kenton will sign a new deal at Carrow Road.

"I think the tabloids are very good at trying to get players to move," Worthington told the club's official website. "I can see Darren signing a contract at this football club.

"I certainly want him to. I think it would be good for him to spend another couple of years at Norwich City, it's a wonderful learning environment.

"I truly believe the best place for him is at this football club. It's similar to the Phil Mulryne situation last season.

"I think he should sign for another two or three years, learn his trade, keep improving and if the step comes to climb higher with this club or with another club, then he will be better prepared for it."

The Magpies have also been linked with a move for Arsenal defender Matthew Upson as they look to bolster their shaky rearguard.

Upson has found himself well down the pecking order at Highbury behind Sol Campbell, Martin Keown, Pascal Cygan, Oleg Luzhny and Igors Stepanovs for a place in defence.

The former England Under-21 international is currently on loan at Reading and would jump at the chance to move to St James' Park if the club follow up their interest.

Meanwhile Newcastle have announced that they have released four of their scholars.

Goalkeeper Carl Bell, midfielders Tommy English and Chris Moore and defender Aaron Labonte, who are all in the final year of their scholarships with The Magpies, have been informed they will not be offered professional contracts.
