Sammer blasts arrogant Arsenal

BORUSSIA DORTMUND coach Matthias Sammer has stoked the fires ahead of their Champions League clash with Arsenal on Wednesday by accusing them of 'diving' and 'arrogance'.

The German champions take on their English counterparts at the Westfallenstadion in a crucial Champions League tie with Dortmund just two points behind Arsenal in Group A.

Arsenal beat Dortmund 2-0 in the first meeting at Highbury last month and Sammer insists his side is out for revenge against The Gunners on Wednesday because of their antics in the first game singling out a mystery player in particular for his play-acting.

"A lot of my players came away from Arsenal wanting to knock the arrogance off the faces of some of the Arsenal players," Sammer told The News of the World.

"It would be justice if we win because we felt certain people were guilty of diving - not only to gain free-kicks but also to get my players in trouble. The referee seemed convinced by their acting.

"One individual has been talked about, both in The Premiership and Europe, for two seasons now. He goes down like he's been shot, only to get up moments later. This causes great anger.

"There were some unsavoury challenges which went unpunished. These things remain firmly in your mind and that's why we are out for revenge."

Meanwhile, Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has confirmed that Dennis Bergkamp will not travel to Germany for the game.

The Dutchman has just recovered from an Achilles injury and Wenger does not want the forward making the long trip to Germany by car.
