Monaco may have to sell stars

MONACO may be forced to sell several of their leading players to stave off a financial crisis, although Marcelo Gallardo is discussing a new contract.

Rumours sweeping France suggest the Principality club are in dire straits due to their inability to fund wages.

At the start of the season, Monaco had to borrow money to pay the wages for August, September and October while June's salary was paid late.

Chairman Jean-Louis Campora has already indicated he is prepared to leave the club if a new investor is found.

The plight of Monaco has prompted speculation that a string of key figures, such as Shabani Nonda, Rafael Marquez and Gallardo will be offloaded to balance the books.

Mexican defender Marquez is eager to quit Stade Louis II with Real Madrid among his suitors and Campora admits he could depart when the transfer window reopens in January.

However, Campora refuted suggestions Gallardo would be heading for the exit door as the Argentinian playmaker is currently negotiating a contract extension.

"For example, Rafael Marquez wants to leave but up to now, we didn't have a proposition we estimated to be worth the value of the player," said Campora.

"But, if during the Mercato, we have an appropriate proposition, we will study seriously this proposition.

"I can also reveal that, at the moment, we are in talks with Marcelo Gallardo and his agent to study a likely extension of his contract for three more years."
