Xavier back on fitness trail

ABEL XAVIER is on the comeback trail for Liverpool after a mystery illness, but will not be ready for Wednesday's Champions League clash with Valencia.

The Portuguese international has not featured for The Reds since the 2-2 draw with Newcastle United on September 2 due to the illness and manager Gerard Houllier will be glad to have the defender fit and well.

"Abel has started training again but I don't think he'll be ready for tomorrow (Wednesday) night," admitted Houllier.

Xavier joined Liverpool from neighbours Everton in a £800,000 deal and has established himself as an important squad player for Houllier who lost first choice right back Markus Babbel to the serious nerve illness Guillan Barre Syndrome.
