Boyle hangs up his boots

DUNFERMLINE manager Jimmy Calderwood has confirmed that midfielder Steven Boyle has retired from professional football.

The 21-year-old midfielder has been virtually injured throughout his entire spell with The Pars and has now given up his battle to regain full fitness.

Calderwood revealed he gave the youngster a week to mull over his decision, after originally asking for his contract to be terminated last week.

"Steve Boyle came to see me last week and asked for his contract to be terminated," said Calderwood. "I told him to go away and think about it for a week and he's done that.

"I said we'd talk about it this week, but he's still of the same opinion so as of today we've terminated his contract.

"He's had a horrendous time with injuries over the last two-and-a-half years. He's played about 10 games in total during that time, not even for the first team.

"I'm not saying the lad has not got that, but when you keep getting knocked back by injuries it can be hard."
