Shearer hit with Uefa charge

UEFA have charged Newcastle captain Alan Shearer for his alleged elbow on Internazionale defender Fabio Cannavaro during their Champions League clash on Wednesday.

Inter put in a splendid display to come away with a 4-1 win at St James' Park but the game was marred by the sending off of Craig Bellamy.

Former England captain Shearer was also involved in an incident with Italian international defender Fabio Cannavaro, that European football's governing body are now looking into.

Officials have looked at video evidence of the incident after Shearer looked to have elbowed the former Parma man after a tussle between the two players.

The elbowing incident was missed the match referee Stephane Bre, but Uefa are due to make a decision on any punishment that may be dished out within the next couple of days.

Bellamy and Shearer now face European bans that could spell the end to The Toon Army's European adventure in a very tough second group phase.

Fiery Welshman Bellamy has already had a three-game ban in Europe after his headbutt against Dinamo Kiev in Newcastle's first game of the tournament, and Shearer could face a similar punishment if found guilty.
