Blues miss chance to go top

CHELSEA missed the chance to go top of The Premiership after being held to a 1-1 draw by Middlesbrough at The Riverside on Saturday afternoon.

Cameroon ace Geremi gave Middlesbrough the lead in the 32nd minute with a brilliantly executed free kick from the edge of the area, which left Blues goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini with no chance.

Substitute Claus Jensen doubled Charlton's advantage with the second goal after 63 minutes with a superb side-footed finish.

Foe got City back in the game pulling a goal back in the 73rd minute.

The game looked set to end all-square until Hitzlsperger produced a devastating 30-yard shot to stun the visitors and give the home side all three points.

Southampton and Newcastle shared the spoils after an entertaining 1-1 draw at St Mary's

Newcastle took the lead five minutes after the restart with Craig Bellamy netting the 50th league goal of his career with a wonderful effort from the edge of the penalty area.
