Demichelis stays by the River - for now

MARTIN DEMICHELIS will remain in River Plate until June 2003, when he will join German giants Bayern Munich.

Both parties have agreed a deal for the 21-year-old defender, believed to be worth around $4.6 million (£2.8 million), rising to $5.1 million (£3.1 million) if the Argentine makes 25 Bundesliga appearances.

The talented youngster is currently enjoying his holidays in his hometown and revealed the transfer to the Olympic Stadium was the icing on the cake.

"Being transferred makes me end the year in a brilliant way and it's fair that I have the chance to play in the Libertadores Cup before leaving Argentina," said Demichelis.

"Obviously I knew everything about the negotiations but I couldn't say anything most of all because I didn't want to get illusioned with something that I didn't know how was going to end. Now my agent has told me that everything has been arranged and I am very happy.

"When the year started my dream was to play the derbies against Boca in the pre-season matches but I have lived many strong things. We won the local championship in the first half of the year, I played many games and now I have been transferred but with the chance of playing in the Libertadores Cup before leaving River.

"I really can't ask for anything else."
