Marcelino leaves Newcastle

NEWCASTLE UNITED have parted company with Spanish misfit Marcelino.

The defender has failed to hold down a regular place since his big-money arrival under Ruud Gullit in 1999, prompting The Magpies to pay up the remaining five months of his contract.

Marcelino, who featured in just 22 games for Newcastle, made his last appearance against Charlton in February 2001.

St James` Park chief Sir Bobby Robson has been desperately searching for a commanding defender, from inside or out of the club, but a string of niggling injuries hampered Marcelino`s efforts on Tyneside.

Newcastle have now cut their losses on their near £6 million outlay, with the one crumb of comfort being that Robson now has a place available in his squad for a new capture.
