Magpies trail Pole

NEWCASTLE UNITED have considered a raid for Schalke defender Tomasz Hajto, according to sources in Poland.

The World Cup stopper recently retired from international football after winning 47 caps, but the coach he fell out with, Zbigniew Boniek, has since departed the Polish hot-seat.

Sir Bobby Robson is hunting for a new defender, and has got several options, but it is understood that he has seriously considered Hajto's merits.

The former Duisburg centre back scored against Wisla Krakow, from his homeland, in the Uefa Cup last December, but it was scant consolation as Schalke lost 4-1 at home, and crashed out of the competition.

Hajto signed a new deal with the club a year ago, tying him to Arena AufSchalke until 2005, but a sizeable offer from St James' Park may force Schalke to consider the proposal.
