Cologne close on Wessels

FC COLOGNE have confirmed that they are pulling out all the stops to sign Bayern Munich's reserve goalkeeper Stefan Wessels.

The 23-year-old custodian has found Oliver Kahn too big an obstacle to overcome at the Olympic Stadium and stated his intention to move to find first-team football.

"We are doing everything possible to sign Wessels," Cologne sports manager Andreas Retting told 'Kicker'.

"I am confident that we have got a real chance.

"Stefan has assured us that his sporting aspects are more important to him than the financial aspect of a move."

The fact that Cologne are looking at Wessels will heighten speculation about the future of number one Markus Proll who is being strongly linked with a switch to Werder Bremen.
