Sevilla swoop for Ajax star

SEVILLA have clinched the loan signing of Greek international hit-man Nikos Machlas from Ajax until the end of the season.

The Primera side will have the option to complete the permanent transfer of the 29-year-old should he impress during his spell at the Sanchez Pizjuan.

The deal is still reliant on the former Vitesse Arnhem star passing a medical in Seville on Monday.

Sevilla president, Jose Maria del Nido, expressed his delight at finally completing negotiations for a top-level forward the club have been desperately searching for.

"We said we wanted to bring a player in during this period (transfer window) and we've managed it, whilst at the same time satisfying the wishes of the manager," said del Nido.

"We're happy to have a former Golden Boot winner in our squad ranks."

Machlas moved to Ajax from Vitesse in the 1999-00 season, but has found his opportunities at the Amsterdam ArenA limited this term by the good form of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Mido.

The Greek moves to Spain having managed only three goals for Ronald Koeman's men this campaign.
