Spurs beat Black Cats to Toda

TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR have confirmed the capture of Japanese World Cup star Kazuyuki Toda from under the noses of Sunderland.

The Shimizu S-Pulse ace enjoyed a successful trial at the Stadium of Light last week and was expected to complete a move to The Black Cats, but reports in Japan suggested that Sunderland were unable to agree terms for a deal.

This alerted Tottenham boss Glenn Hoddle to his possible availability and Spurs have now wrapped up a whirlwind deal for the Japanese ace.

"Toda is an immensely impressive midfielder and we are delighted to welcome him to the club," said Hoddle.

"His addition to the squad will give us more options in this area, and I am sure the fans will quickly see the benefit of his strengths."

Toda has signed a one-year deal at White Hart Lane and has already been granted a work permit.

The Asian ace will undergo a medical over the weekend, before being unveiled at a press conference next week.

The news will be a major blow for Black Cats boss Howard Wilkinson who had hoped to bring in Toda to his injury-hit midfield to aid their fight against relegation.

"It's not easy getting the players you want, and the type of players you want," admitted Wilkinson.

"There is no point bringing people in for the sake of it.

"It's not easy but, with a week to go, we are feverishly working away at it because we could still do with two or three of the right players.

"I want people coming in who can challenge the people here and provide competition for them."
