Acuna wants Chilean return

CLARENCE ACUNA has affirmed his desire to return to the international scene despite his disappointment at not receiving support from Chile when he failed a dope test.

The Newcastle United midfielder tested positive while on international duty after a match against Peru in April 2000.

In the aftermath of the incident, Acuna was miffed at failing to gain backing from the Chilean federation and he has been a stranger to the international arena in the ensuing period.

But following the appointment of Chile's new coach, Juvenal Olmos, Acuna is determined to resurrect his international career and play in the 2006 World Cup in Germany.

"I maintain that they did not support me but that has happened," opined Acuna.

"One must turn the page because the road to Germany in 2006 is complicated and I want to return to the World Cup - that is the dream of any footballer.

"I don't have problems in playing. What's more, I have never said that I renounced selection for Chile."

Acuna is currently back in his homeland after his mother fell ill, meaning he is not available for Newcastle's trip to Tottenham on Wednesday evening.

However, it is his international future that is forefront in his football thoughts as he seeks an end from his Chilean exile.

The fresh face at the helm, Olmos, revealed he would be happy to recall Acuna but is concerned at the effect the doping incident had on the 27-year-old.

Olmos said: "Clarence is fundamental but I have doubts about if he is going to want to play on account of his positive dope test as he felt he was defrauded by the medical body in the testing process."
