Monaco too strong for Auxerre

MONACO assumed the mantle of chief challengers to Marseille, with a 3-1 home win over Auxerre.

Guy Roux`s troops came into the game knowing a win would see them take over the second-favourite`s tag, but they could not come to terms with Didier Deschamps` men.

Early Monaco pressure turned into a goal on 13 minutes, as Dado Prso capitalised on a defensive error to beat Fabien Cool.

Monaco doubled their advantage shortly after the break when Ludovic Giuly (pictured) was presented with an easy opportunity after Jerome Rothen had cut Auxerre to shreds with a dazzling run down the flank.

An unmarked Djibril Cisse gave Auxerre hope with a goal on 55 minutes, but Shabani Nonda scored from a Rothen corner to seal victory for the Principality side.

Monaco are now two points behind Marseille, as the South Coast outfits look set to battle it out for the title.
